Media Jumps On Royal Engagement Comparisons
Whilst many of us aren't as preoccupied by the upcoming royal wedding as the media believe we are, disgruntled republicans have largely come to accept that the constant coverage is here to stay. But are two royal weddings just too much? Zara Phillips' engagement to rugby star Mike Tindall is certainly adding more fuel to the royal wedding media fire. Whilst the world's second happiest couple look for Wedding venues in England, the media is left scratching its head about the timing of the announcement. All that happiness will surely risk a deficit in 2012! Woe of woes!. From the perspective of someone completely detached from the Royal cult of personality, the marriage of two sports people actually seems more deserving than the eternal happiness of two art history students. If Zara Phillips was hoping to steal some thunder, she grossly miscalculated. In fact, how could she have possibly believed that it was possible to challenge Wills and Kate? She probably won't even get a commemorative mug out of the endeavour. And that's probably exactly how she wants it.
However, the price to paid is the glut of inevitable comparisons. Who has the most expensive engagement ring? Who get the responsibility of photographing the big day, and how professional are they? On a scale of one to five, how regal is each lady's style (Thank you, Daily Mirror)? Will we see a weekend in lavish Castle accommodation or will she ride into a Gloucestershire town hall and casually sign her name away? The only comparison I'd dare to make is that Zara probably cares a whole lot less than the newspapers do about the extravagance of her wedding arrangements. On the positive side, the distraction of Kate Middleton's edgy non-royal but totally a millionaire background stops people remarking about Tindall's background. 'The only member of the Royal family to have worked in a chippy' is still a grammar school boy after all, so it would have been tiresome to see him become Zara's Mrs Simpson.
Nobody is spared the comparisons, so perhaps you too should court the controversy. Nobody's family is as dysfunctional as the house of Windsor, but I'm sure there are plenty out there dealing with invitation nightmares and attention seeking? Book into a Castle hotel on royal wedding week and watch as your less level headed relatives debate the merits of being there or not.
