Earth Magnets

The Magnetism Of Earth Magnets

‘Rare earth elements' is a term used to describe 16 elements on the periodic table. Some of these include ytterbium, cerium, praseodymium, neodymium, lanthanu and samarium. When they were first discovered in the 1800s they were thought to be very rare and hence the name. However, subsequent studies have proved that they are quite commonly found. These elements have a few properties in common, one of which is their magnetic property due to which they can be used in the manufacture of earth magnets.

Earth magnets are very powerful permanent magnets made by creating alloys with rare earth elements and other elements such as iron or boron. Such magnets have a very strong magnet field than that produced by ferrite or alnico magnets. The magnetic field is usually more than 1.4 teslas whereas other magnets have a power of 0.5 to 1 tesla. These magnets are also usually permanent. However, sometimes if exposed to very high temperatures for a long time, they will lose their magnetic field. Earth magnets are very brittle and when they shatter they do so with an explosion-like force which can be dangerous to people. They are also prone to corrosion and chipping. In order to protect their brittle nature, they are usually plated or coated.

These magnets due to their high magnetic field are used in many industries. They are also found as components of electronic items such as speakers and computers. Another common use is by magicians and illusionists who use these magnets to perform tricks such as moving heavy objects without touching them. Earth magnets are also included in scientific kits for budding scientist kids or for anyone interested in experiments with magnetism. They can be bought from companies that sell scientific supplies.

Neodymium magnets and samarium-cobalt magnets are two common rare earth magnets. Neodymium is among the most popular of the magnets, as it is the strongest and also among the cheapest. Samarium-cobalt magnets are used in industrial manufacturing that can withstand very high temperatures without losing their magnetism. Their downside is that they are very brittle and quite expensive.

The magnetic strength of the earth magnet is a boon, but must also be handled carefully. They can affect the function of pacemakers and cause other electrical components to stop working properly. When holding an earth magnet and a metal object, extreme caution is advisable. Due to their powerful magnetism, they will pull in even heavy metallic objects and can smash the holder's hands and fingers. The bigger the magnet is in size, the bigger the risk.  However, their uses surely outweigh their disadvantages and risks and earth magnets continue to help and fascinate people with the sheer magic of their pulling power.
