Adorning Ancient Dolls with Clothes
Dolls are usually thought of as children's toys but they have also been used in magic and religious rituals in the Americas, Asia, Africa and Europe since ancient times. The earliest dolls were used in the ancient civilizations of Egypt, Greece and Rome. Although they served religious purposes, dolls were also used as toys in Greece around 100AD.
These dolls were considered works of art. They were made from a variety of materials such as clay, stone, wood, bone, ivory, leather and wax. The dolls in Egypt were wooden paddle dolls that were discovered in tombs and had limbs and clothing.
On the other hand, Greek dolls were made of clay. Roman dolls, were discovered in the children's grave, were also made of clay, wood or ivory. Like today's dolls, Roman children were fond of adorning their dolls according to the latest trends. These dolls were also dedicated to a goddess when both Greek and Roman girls got married. Though they were used as playthings, they were also important tools for children's education.
African dolls, in particular, were designed to teach and entertain. They held spiritual values and were often used in rituals. They were not dressed in American doll clothes like those of today's modern dolls and Roman dolls, but they were dressed according to region and custom. Many of them were clothed in animal fur. Their clothes were designed to survive extreme weather conditions—cold winters, wind and snow.
Like African dolls, Japanese dolls also had spiritual and religious values. They were not only used as playthings but also as protection. Though they were not garbed in 18inch doll clothes like most dolls are today, they were made of straw and wood, painted and dressed in multi-layered textiles instead. Some of the Japanese dolls served good-luck charms.
Others adorned 18inch doll clothes like those belonging to the Native American and European cultures were used as magical devices or rather effigy. For instance, in European folk magic, dolls were designed to represent a person who served as a target for casting spells. Actions performed on the effigy are transferred by magic, just like the voodoo dolls. However, like Japanese dolls, these European dolls also served as good-luck charms. They were believed to ward off bad spirits and offer protection.
